Bringing ashes into the UK: what is true from anywhere
There is no UK import restriction on human ashes, and UK customs does not require you to declare them. You carry the ashes and the cremation certificate through customs in the ordinary way. Nothing on the UK side is the difficult part.
The difficulty is always the departure side. Each country decides what documentation it wants before ashes may leave, and some require an export permit issued by a named authority. That is why each country has its own page.
Airline and security rules that apply on any route
- Most major airlines allow ashes in hand luggage in a sealed container, but confirm with your airline by phone rather than relying on the website.
- Carry the cremation certificate in the same bag as the urn, never in checked luggage.
- Non-metallic or X-ray-transparent containers pass security screening far more easily.
- Allow extra time at check-in and explain the situation calmly at the desk.
- Shipping by courier is a last resort. If you must, use a specialist funeral courier rather than a general parcel service.

The UK does not restrict the import of human ashes. There is no customs declaration required. The documentation requirements are on the departure side, and vary by country.

Cremation certificate
Always required. Issued by the crematorium where the cremation took place. Keep it with the ashes at all times during travel. Most airlines will ask to see it at check-in.
Airline confirmation
Contact your airline at least 48 hours before travel. Rules vary. Metal urns cannot be X-rayed and may be refused as hand luggage. Use a wooden or biodegradable travel urn for the journey.
On arrival in the UK
No import declaration is required. Walk through with your ashes and cremation certificate. You will not be stopped at customs for ashes, but having the certificate avoids any confusion.
