What you need to carry ashes from Egypt
If the cremation has already taken place in Egypt, bringing the ashes home to the UK is a straightforward process. There is no UK import restriction on human ashes. The challenge is the departure side: each country has its own documentation requirements and some require export permits.
Airline rules
Most major airlines permit ashes in hand luggage in a sealed container. Rules vary by airline and the type of urn. Key points:
- Carry the cremation certificate at all times during travel — airport security may ask for it.
- Metal urns cannot be screened by X-ray and may be refused as hand luggage on some airlines. Bring a wooden or biodegradable travel urn instead, then transfer to a permanent urn at home.
- Some airlines require advance notification. Contact your airline at least 48 hours before travel.
- Checked luggage is an option for some airlines, though most families prefer hand luggage for obvious reasons.
