What does Kyrgyzstan require before ashes can leave?
Departure airports: FRU (Manas International Airport, Bishkek)
Carriers serving the UK: Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul Ataturk); flydubai (via Dubai International); Air Manas (domestic)
Authority that must release the case: Republican Centre of Forensic Medical Examination, Bishkek
The rules that apply on any route, and what you may do with ashes once home, are covered in bringing ashes into the UK.
What are the airline rules for carrying ashes?
What does Kyrgyzstan require to export ashes?
Cremation availability
Cremation may be restricted or unavailable in Kyrgyzstan due to religious or legal reasons. If you are dealing with ashes from a previous cremation held elsewhere, the export rules may differ. Contact us for guidance specific to your situation.
What affects the cost?
Carrying ashes home yourself is the least expensive way to bring someone back from Kyrgyzstan, and for many families it costs little more than the return flight they are already taking. We do not publish a figure, because what you pay depends on the case.
| What changes the cost | Why |
|---|---|
| Whether the cremation has already taken place | Arranging it locally adds funeral director and crematorium involvement |
| Where the death happened | Distance to the nearest crematorium changes local transfer |
| Carrying versus shipping | Hand luggage costs nothing extra; a specialist courier is a separate arrangement |
| Documentation Kyrgyzstan requires | Export permits and translation, where they apply |
Send us the details of your situation and we will give you a figure, with no obligation.
What else is worth knowing about Kyrgyzstan?
Kyrgyzstan has a significant high-altitude mountaineering community; Peak Lenin (7,134m) and Khan Tengri (6,995m) in the Tian Shan range are popular with British and international climbers; deaths on these mountains require specialist high-altitude rescue teams before the body can be recovered and transferred to Bishkek; this phase alone can take 7-21 days depending on conditions; UK-accredited Kyrgyz legal translators are extremely rare, comparable in scarcity to Lao and significantly rarer than Georgian or Armenian; contact the British Embassy Bishkek immediately on notification of death and request their current translator contacts before documents are issued; Issyk-Kul Lake, in the Tian Shan foothills, is the main tourist destination for British visitors; it is one of the largest alpine lakes in the world; drowning deaths occur here, and transfers from the Issyk-Kul region to Bishkek are approximately 250 km by road; Nomadic tourism, yurt stays, horse trekking in remote Son-Kul and Naryn provinces, is growing among British visitors; deaths in these areas involve very long overland transfers on unpaved tracks, often requiring 4x4 vehicles; there is no air infrastructure in the central provinces; Cremation is not widely available in Kyrgyzstan; repatriation of the body is the standard route for British nationals; the British Embassy Bishkek should be consulted before any cremation arrangements are considered locally
