Cremation abroad and ashes transport

Cremation abroad or full repatriation: how families decide

There is no single right answer. Full repatriation brings your loved one home intact, which matters deeply to many families. Cremation abroad can be quicker and considerably less costly, and where your loved one had expressed a wish to be cremated, it is often the natural choice.

The factors that decide it are usually these: your loved one's religious or personal wishes, whether a UK coroner may need to be involved, the time available before religious observance requires action, and what is actually possible in the country where they died. That last one varies enormously, which is why each country has its own page.

Carrying ashes on the flight home: what applies everywhere

These points hold whichever country you are travelling from. Your country page covers the rules that country adds on top.

• Call the airline directly before travel to confirm their current policy, rather than relying on the website.
• Carry all documents in the same bag as the urn, never in checked luggage.
• Non-metallic urns or temporary containers are much easier at security screening.
• Allow extra time at check-in, and explain the situation calmly to staff at the desk.
• UK customs does not generally restrict ashes brought in from abroad, though documentation will be checked.
