City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Benidorm, Spain
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Benidorm. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
How long repatriation from Benidorm takes depends almost entirely on one factor: whether the Spanish Juzgado de Instrucción becomes involved. For deaths with a clear natural cause certified by a physician, the process runs 7 to 14 days from date of death to UK arrival. Where the Juzgado investigates — which it must for any unexpected, traumatic, or unexplained death — the minimum working timeline extends to 14 to 28 days. Criminal cases take 6 weeks or longer.
Benidorm itself has no airport. The departure hub for all repatriations from the Costa Blanca is Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (ALC), approximately 60 kilometres south.
What drives timeline variation
Physician-certified natural death (7–14 days): A doctor attending the death certifies the cause. No Juzgado referral. The death is registered directly at the Registro Civil in Benidorm (part of Alicante province). Certified death certificate issued in 3 to 7 working days. Embalming, export paperwork, and cargo booking proceed in parallel with certification.
Juzgado involvement (14–28 days): Any death that is sudden, occurs without a physician present, involves trauma, or is in any way unclear triggers mandatory referral to the Juzgado de Instrucción. The Juzgado orders a judicial autopsy (autopsia médico-forense). Until the Juzgado issues its release (levantamiento del cadáver), the body cannot be moved to the funeral home. This investigation phase alone takes 5 to 15 working days. Registration and certification follow.
Cardiac deaths in elderly visitors (common in Benidorm): Many deaths in Benidorm involve elderly British visitors with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. If the death is unattended — in a hotel room, for example — the Juzgado is automatically triggered even if cardiac disease is the clear cause. Families should anticipate the longer timeline in these situations.

Alicante Airport cargo
British Airways operates ALC-LHR direct services. Some cases route via Madrid Barajas (MAD) if a BA cargo slot at ALC is unavailable. Road transfer from Benidorm to Alicante Airport takes approximately 45 minutes. The licensed Benidorm or Alicante funeral director manages the airport handover.
Documentation required for export:
- Spanish death certificate (Registro Civil certified copy)
- Juzgado release document where applicable
- Licencia de enterramiento / export authorisation
- Embalming certificate
- Freedom from infection certificate
- Airline cargo booking confirmation
- Passport of the deceased
British consular contacts
The British Consulate in Alicante (Explanada de España 4, 2nd floor) covers the Costa Blanca and is the correct first consular contact for Benidorm deaths. The consulate registers British national deaths and advises on documentation. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Key local considerations
Benidorm has one of the highest concentrations of British tourists and long-term residents in Spain. Local funeral homes — particularly those in the tourist zone — are highly experienced in UK repatriation requirements. The town has a well-established network of British-facing services, which means English-language assistance is readily available from local funeral directors.
Travel insurance is critical. Policies must be checked before assuming repatriation is covered: some standard travel policies exclude pre-existing cardiac conditions, and many Benidorm visitors are in the higher-risk age group.
