Repatriation from Silver Coast, Portugal
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Silver Coast. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Portugal’s Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) runs from the Setúbal peninsula north through Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, Nazaré, and Peniche to Figueira da Foz. It has attracted significant numbers of British long-stay residents over the past decade, many of whom came through the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax scheme and have since settled permanently. The area is quieter and less expensive than the Algarve, and it draws retirees who want to be within an hour of Lisbon without paying Lisbon prices.
Deaths in this region are less commonly handled by funeral directors with extensive UK repatriation experience compared to the Algarve. That makes early engagement with a specialist even more important.
What the British Embassy covers
The British Embassy Lisbon (Rua de São Bernardo 33, Lisbon) covers all of Portugal. There is no resident British consulate in the Silver Coast region. The Embassy registers the death in UK consular records, advises on Portuguese documentation requirements, and provides a funeral director referral list.
The Embassy cannot repatriate the body or pay any costs.

What Portuguese law requires
Conservatória do Registo Civil: Deaths in Portugal are registered at the local Conservatória. For the Silver Coast, the relevant offices are in Caldas da Rainha, Nazaré, Peniche, and Óbidos (which uses the Caldas da Rainha office). The assentamento de óbito (death registration) and certidão de óbito (death certificate) are issued here.
Médico Legista: Sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are referred to the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal e Ciências Forenses (INMLCF), Delegação do Centro, whose forensic unit covers the Silver Coast region. Cases requiring autopsy are transferred to this facility.
Autorização de transporte de cadáver para o estrangeiro: The international transport authorisation is issued by the Autoridade de Saúde local (Health Authority) under the Decreto-Lei 411/98 framework.
Hospital coverage
Hospital Distrital de Caldas da Rainha (Rua do Hospital) is the primary public hospital for the northern Silver Coast. For serious medical emergencies, patients may be transferred to Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Norte (Santa Maria, Lisbon). Many British long-stay residents in the Silver Coast also hold SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde) user numbers and may have Portuguese private health insurance through Fidelidade or Multicare. Where a British resident dies in a private clinic in Caldas or Óbidos, the same legal process applies.
The documentation chain
1. Certidão de óbito from Conservatória do Registo Civil (Caldas da Rainha or relevant office). 2. INMLCF clearance (in sudden deaths). 3. Autorização de transporte de cadáver para o estrangeiro from Autoridade de Saúde. 4. Embalming certificate. 5. IATA cargo documentation — LIS to LHR or LGW.

Airport and cargo routing
Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is the international departure point for Silver Coast repatriations. Road transfer from Caldas da Rainha to LIS takes approximately 75 minutes via the A8 motorway. British Airways and TAP Air Portugal operate LIS-LHR direct (approximately 2.5 hours). The cargo process at LIS is well-established and local funeral directors in the Caldas area have established relationships with the airport’s cargo handling agents.
Long-stay resident considerations
British residents who came to Portugal under the NHR scheme are registered with Finanças (tax authority) and, if resident for more than five years, may be registered on the Junta de Freguesia. Deaths of NHR-registered British nationals trigger a joint Portuguese and UK estate process. The notariedade (notary system) in Portugal handles testamentos and habilitações de herdeiros; where no Portuguese will exists, intestacy rules under the Código Civil Português apply to Portuguese-held assets. This runs in parallel to any UK Grant of Probate. None of it prevents repatriation, but families who don’t appoint a Portuguese lawyer early often encounter delays in releasing assets months later.
