Two things set the cost of a Gabon repatriation apart from most of its neighbours: a government still settling in after a coup, and a country that’s mostly forest.
The CTRI transition
In August 2023, Gabon’s military removed President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who had governed since 2009, and installed the Comite de Transition et de Restauration des Institutions, led by General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. The courts and civil registry have carried on functioning. What hasn’t fully settled is predictability: processing times at government ministries can still fluctuate, and that uncertainty is itself a cost, since it makes planning around a fixed timeline harder than in a country with stable, settled institutions.
Coordinating across a border
Gabon has no resident British consular office. Coverage comes from the non-resident British High Commission in Yaoundé, in neighbouring Cameroon, reached on +237 222 220 796, alongside the FCDO Emergency Travel Line on 020 7008 5000. Cross-border coordination adds a layer that a resident mission wouldn’t require, and it’s a genuine reason this corridor is rated higher complexity than most of West Africa.
Forest, not roads
Outside Libreville, Port-Gentil, and Franceville, Gabon is overwhelmingly equatorial forest, roughly 85% of the country’s interior, with very little road infrastructure to speak of. A death at a logging camp, an oil facility, or deep inside a national park can mean light aircraft or boat transfer is needed just to get the process started, before the Tribunal de Premiere Instance registers the death or the Parquet grants clearance for export.
No cremation alternative
Gabon has no cremation facilities. Where a family might otherwise consider cremation as a way to simplify things, here that choice only becomes available once the body has already been repatriated to the UK.
Air France’s direct Libreville to Paris CDG service is the most reliable routing option we use for Gabon cases, with Royal Air Maroc and Ethiopian Airlines as alternatives depending on where a connection is needed.
