That matters because a death on Tobago needs to move to Trinidad for anything beyond the most routine post-mortem, though the transfer itself is quick and well established.
Who handles the case
The British High Commission sits on St Clair Avenue in Port of Spain and is the first official point of contact for any British national’s death here. They work closely with the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, EWMSC, which carries out national forensic pathology for the whole country.
When the death is on Tobago
Deaths on Tobago are first assessed at Tobago Regional Hospital in Scarborough. Anything needing full forensic post-mortem, which covers all unnatural deaths and some natural-cause deaths where the certifying doctor asks for it, means transfer to EWMSC in Mount Hope. Caribbean Airlines runs that route multiple times daily, a 20-minute hop, adding one to two days overall rather than a real bottleneck. Speyside, on Tobago’s north-east coast, is internationally known for underwater photography and shark diving, and diving deaths there go through the same forensic route.
The coroner process
Every unnatural death triggers a coroner inquest, no exceptions for foreign nationals. Local funeral directors and the High Commission both know this process well, and while it typically adds several days, it rarely surprises anyone working the case.
Getting home
British Airways flies Port of Spain to London Gatwick or Heathrow direct, which means genuine direct cargo routing rather than a third-country connection, a real advantage over most other Caribbean corridors. Virgin Atlantic also serves Tobago from Gatwick during peak season, though Tobago-originating cargo usually still passes through Trinidad first. One practical note: over the Carnival period, February to March, some government offices run reduced hours, so build that into what you expect from the timeline.
