Repatriation from United States to Japan: what to expect

Japanese Americans and American nationals of Japanese descent maintain strong family ties to Japan, making the United States to Japan corridor a consistent repatriation route. California, Hawaii, and New York have long-established Japanese American communities. Japan requires MOFA export approval, the Burial Permit (Maiso Kyoka), and a sanitised coffin certificate before remains can depart. The Japanese Embassy in Washington DC handles consular matters for Japanese families affected by a death in the United States. (Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MOFA, 2025.)

  • Key documents: US death certificate (state-issued, certified copy) and Embalming certificate
  • Documentation takes 5-14 days depending on the state. New York and California take longer.
  • British Embassy in Washington DC and consulates across the US register the death and advise.
  • A post-mortem may be ordered by the state medical examiner or county coroner for unexpected deaths.
  • Japan Embassy in Washington DC can advise on documentation. They cannot fund repatriation.
