Repatriation from Turkey to United States: what to expect
Turkish-American communities across New York, New Jersey, and California account for consistent repatriation demand. Turkey's well-organised civil registration system makes documentation on this corridor relatively straightforward with a specialist. The nufus mudurlugu (civil registry) handles official documentation.
- Key documents: Turkish death certificate (olum belgesi) and certified English translation
- Documentation takes 5-10 days. Embalming must be specifically arranged for UK repatriation.
- British Embassy in Ankara (and consulate Istanbul) registers the death and advises.
- Post-mortem ordered by Turkish public prosecutor (cumhuriyet savcisi) for sudden or unexplained deaths.
- United States Embassy in Ankara can advise on documentation. They cannot fund repatriation.
