Syrian nationals form one of Germany's largest Middle Eastern diaspora communities, with over 800,000 Syrians having arrived in Germany since 2015. Germany accepted more Syrian refugees than any other European country during that period. The German Embassy in Damascus closed in 2012; German consular services for Syria are provided from the German Embassy in Beirut. Arabic documentation requires certified German translation. When the body arrives in Germany

The German funeral director takes custody at the cargo terminal, typically Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), or Berlin (BER). A Leichenpass (body transport passport) or equivalent laissez-passer must accompany the remains. The local Gesundheitsamt (public health authority) may inspect the remains on arrival. The receiving funeral director registers the death with the local Standesamt (civil registry) if required. (German Federal Foreign Office, Auswaertiges Amt, 2025.)

What happens after a death in Syria

Contact the Do not attempt to travel to Syria.
