Key facts

Repatriation from Sweden to Eritrea: what to expect

Sweden has a large Eritrean diaspora community, one of the largest per capita in Europe, with Eritrean nationals concentrated in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo, many arriving as refugees during and after the independence war and the subsequent conflicts. When an Eritrean national dies in Sweden and their family wishes to repatriate remains to Eritrea, the death is registered with Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency). The dodsfallsintyg (death notification certificate) is issued in Swedish and requires translation for submission to Eritrean authorities. The Eritrean Embassy in Stockholm can advise on documentation requirements. Eritrea is not a Hague Apostille Convention member; full consular authentication is required. (FCDO Travel Advice: Eritrea, 2025; NSEO, Eritrea, 2025.)

The British Embassy in Asmara is operational but operates on a limited basis; FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Eritrea.
