Quick answer
Repatriation from Spain to the UK: what to expect
Spain is the largest single repatriation corridor for British families. Over 100,000 British nationals live in Spain and millions more visit each year. The process is well-understood by both sides. Documentation runs through the Juzgado de Instruccion for unexpected deaths.
- Key documents: Certificado de defuncion and Embalming certificate
- Documentation takes 3-7 days. The Juzgado is involved in all sudden or unattended deaths.
- British Embassy in Madrid registers the death and advises. They cannot fund repatriation.
- Island deaths (Balearics, Canaries) require internal mainland transfer before international cargo departs.
The process
What happens after a death in Spain
Contact emergency services (112). A doctor certifies the death. If death is sudden, unattended, or traumatic, the Juzgado de Instruccion takes jurisdiction before the body can be moved. Death registered at the Registro Civil. The certificado de defuncion is issued. For deaths on the Balearic or Canary Islands, internal transfer to a mainland airport (Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga) is required before the international cargo flight.

Yes. Cremation in Spain and bringing ashes home to the UK is often simpler and less costly than full body repatriation. You will need the certificado de defuncion, cremation certificate, and export permit. Ashes can be carried on a passenger flight.
