What happens after a death in Spain

Contact emergency services (112). A doctor certifies the death. If death is sudden, unattended, or traumatic, the Juzgado de Instruccion takes jurisdiction before the body can be moved. Death registered at the Registro Civil. The certificado de defuncion is issued. For deaths on the Balearic or Canary Islands, internal transfer to a mainland airport (Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga) is required before the international cargo flight.

When the body arrives in Portugal

The Portuguese agencia funeraria (funeral director) takes custody at Lisbon (LIS), Porto (OPO), or Faro (FAO) cargo terminal. An Autoridade de Saude (health authority) clearance is required before burial or cremation can proceed. The Conservatoria do Registo Civil registers the death. Portugal is an EU and Hague Apostille Convention member. Documents from EU-origin countries may use a multilingual EU death certificate.
