Repatriation from Russia to Bahrain: what to expect

Russian nationals in Bahrain include tourists, business professionals, and a growing community of residents. Bahrain maintained a neutral diplomatic position following 2022 and the Bahraini Embassy in Moscow remains operational. Russian death certificates (svidetelstvo o smerti, in Russian) require certified Arabic translation for the Civil Status and Passports Affairs Authority (CSPA) and authentication by the Bahraini Embassy in Moscow. Families should be aware of the FCDO's advice against travel to Russia. (Bahrain Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2025.)

In Bahrain

When the body arrives in Bahrain

The Bahraini funeral director takes custody at Bahrain International Airport (BAH) cargo terminal. The Civil Status and Passports Affairs Authority (CSPA) under the Ministry of Interior registers deaths in Bahrain. For Muslim remains, Islamic law requires prompt preparation and burial; a special authorisation from the CSPA is required for international repatriation to delay disposition. All foreign documents not in Arabic require certified Arabic translation. Authentication by the Bahraini Embassy or Consulate in the country of origin is required. (Bahrain Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2025.)

Consular support

Bahraini Embassy or Consulate in Moscow can advise on documentation requirements for repatriation to Bahrain. Contact the Embassy during business hours. The Embassy cannot pay for or arrange repatriation.

The process

What happens after a death in Russia

Call 112 for emergency services. Death is certified by a physician and the svidetelstvo o smerti is registered with the local ZAGS (Registry Office). Police and the Sledstvenny Komitet (Investigative Committee) take jurisdiction for violent or unexplained deaths. Families should be aware that the FCDO advises against travel to Russia, and consular access by some Western embassies has been significantly reduced since 2022.
