Repatriation from Portugal to Spain: what to expect

Portugal and Spain share the Iberian Peninsula and one of Europe's longest bilateral borders. Hundreds of thousands of Portuguese nationals live and work in Spain, concentrated in Madrid, the Basque Country, Catalonia, and the border regions. Both are EU and Schengen Area members. Portuguese documentation (Certidao de Obito) may require certified Spanish translation for the Registro Civil; EU Apostille conventions apply across both countries. The Spanish Embassy in Lisbon handles consular matters. (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, 2025.)
