In Serbia

When the body arrives in Serbia

The Serbian funeral director takes custody at the cargo terminal at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG). Death is registered with the opstina (municipal) civil status records office (Maticna knjiga umrlih). Death certificates are issued in Serbian in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Serbia is a Hague Apostille Convention member since 2001, which simplifies document authentication for Western documentation.

The process

What happens after a death in Italy

Call 112 or 118 for emergency services. Death must be declared within 24 hours at the local Comune (ufficio di stato civile). The official death certificate is the atto di morte. The Procura della Repubblica (public prosecutor) takes jurisdiction for violent, suspicious, or unexplained deaths; a formal nulla osta is required before the body can be moved. Italy is a Hague Apostille Convention member since 1978. The British Embassy in Rome can assist British nationals.
