Repatriation from Hong Kong to Japan: what to expect

Hong Kong nationals form a significant community in Japan, with many choosing Japan for study, business, and residence. Japan and Hong Kong have extensive economic and cultural ties, and Japanese tourism is one of Hong Kong's largest outbound markets. The number of Hong Kong residents in Japan has grown notably since 2020. Traditional Chinese documentation from Hong Kong requires certified Japanese translation for Japanese municipal registry purposes. The Japanese Consulate-General in Hong Kong handles consular matters. (Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MOFA, 2025.)

The process

What happens after a death in Hong Kong

Call 999 for emergency services. Death must be registered with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Sudden or unexplained deaths are referred to the Coroner's Court under the Coroners Ordinance (Cap. 504). Death certificates are issued in both English and Chinese, which removes translation requirements for UK purposes. Direct flights from Hong Kong International Airport to the UK make air cargo considerably simpler than most long-haul routes.
