Death registration is handled by the local commune (municipalite) civil registry, the Bureau de l'Etat Civil. Death certificates (actes de deces) are issued in Arabic, the official language, with French widely used in Tunisian administrative practice. For Muslim remains, which account for the large majority of Tunisia's population, Islamic law procedures apply and prompt burial is expected.
