The process

What happens after a death in Germany

Call 112 for emergency services. Death is certified by a physician and registered with the local Standesamt (civil registry). The Sterbeurkunde is issued in German. Police and the Staatsanwaltschaft (public prosecutor) take jurisdiction for violent or unexplained deaths. Germany is an EU member and Hague Apostille Convention member.

Key facts

Repatriation from Germany to Netherlands: what to expect

Germany and the Netherlands share a long land border, and hundreds of thousands of Germans live in the Netherlands, working in the cross-border region between North Rhine-Westphalia and the Dutch provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel, and Limburg. Germany and the Netherlands are EU and Schengen Area members. German documentation (Sterbeurkunde) is accepted by the Dutch Burgerlijke Stand (civil registry) without further translation in most cases, as German is one of the accepted major languages.
