France has an Angolan diaspora community, with nationals concentrated in Paris and other cities. Angola was a Portuguese colony until 1975, and French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking communities in France maintain separate ties with Angola. When an Angolan national dies in France and their family wishes to repatriate remains to Angola, the death is registered with the local mairie (town hall). The acte de deces is issued in French and requires certified Portuguese translation for submission to the Conservatoria do Registo Civil. The Angolan Embassy in Paris can advise on documentation requirements. Angola is not a Hague Apostille Convention member.
