The process

What happens after a death in Denmark

Call 112 for emergency services. Death is certified by a physician. The dodsattest is registered with the local kommunen (municipality), which enters the death into the CPR-registret (national civil registration system). The police and retsmediciner (forensic medical examiner) take jurisdiction for violent or unexplained deaths. Denmark is a Hague Apostille Convention member.

Key facts

Repatriation from Denmark to New Zealand: what to expect

Denmark and New Zealand maintain bilateral diplomatic ties, and a small Danish-heritage community is present in New Zealand. Danish nationals have migrated to New Zealand over generations, and family connections exist in both directions. The New Zealand High Commission in London also covers Denmark for consular matters. When a person with New Zealand family connections dies in Denmark, the death is registered with the local kommunen (municipality) and entered into the CPR-registret. The dodsattest requires a certified English translation for New Zealand authorities. Both countries are Hague Apostille Convention members. New Zealand Customs clearance is required on arrival. (FCDO Travel Advice: New Zealand, 2025; New Zealand BDM, Department of Internal Affairs, 2025; Danish CPR-registret, 2025.)
