Repatriation from Colombia to Spain: what to expect

Colombian nationals form Spain's largest Latin American community, with over 430,000 residents. Spain and Colombia share language and many legal traditions; documentation is in Spanish throughout on both sides, which simplifies some requirements.

  • Key document: Registro civil de defuncion (death certificate)
  • Documentation takes 7-14 days. Appoint a specialist on day one.
  • British Embassy in Bogota registers the death and advises. They cannot fund repatriation.
  • Medicina Legal (National Institute of Legal Medicine) is involved in all violent or suspicious deaths, which can significantly extend timelines.
  • All Spanish-language documentation requires certified English translation for Spain acceptance.
