Quick answer

Repatriation from Canada to the United Arab Emirates: what to expect

Canadian nationals work across the UAE in oil and gas, engineering, finance, and professional services, and Dubai is a regular transit point for Canadian travellers. The Canadian Embassy in Abu Dhabi is fully operational. When a Canadian national dies in the UAE and their family wishes to repatriate remains to Canada, the death is registered with the relevant emirate health authority. The UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention; Canadian documents must be attested by the UAE Embassy in Ottawa and then by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • Key document: death certificate (in English or French)
  • Documentation takes 5-10 days. Appoint a specialist on day one.
  • Death must be registered with the provincial civil registration authority promptly.
  • the United Arab Emirates Embassy in Ottawa can advise on documentation. They cannot fund repatriation.

The process

What happens after a death in Canada

Call 911 for emergency services. Death is certified by a physician or medical examiner. The death is registered with the provincial civil registration authority.
