In Nicaragua

When the body arrives in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan funeral director takes custody at the cargo terminal at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA), Managua. Death is registered with the Registro del Estado Civil de las Personas at the Central Registry in Managua or the local registry office where the death occurred. Nicaragua is a Hague Apostille Convention member since 14 May 2013. Death certificates are issued in Spanish.

Consular support

There is no British Embassy in Managua; a British Honorary Consulate operates there by appointment. The British Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica, holds overall responsibility for Nicaragua and can advise on documentation. Hague Apostille applies (Nicaragua joined 2013). Certified translation into the destination language is required outside Spanish-speaking countries.

The process

What happens after a death in Canada

Call 911 for emergency services. Death is certified by a licensed physician and registered with the provincial civil registration authority. The coroner or medical examiner takes jurisdiction for sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths. Canada joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2024, simplifying document authentication. Death certificates are issued in English or French depending on the province. The British High Commission in Ottawa can assist British nationals.
