Repatriation from Canada to Hong Kong: what to expect

Canada hosts the largest Hong Kong diaspora outside Asia, with major communities in Vancouver and Toronto that grew substantially in the years before and after the 1997 handover. When a person with Hong Kong connections dies in Canada and their family wishes to repatriate remains to Hong Kong, the death is registered with the provincial civil records registry. Canadian death certificates require authentication by the Canadian Consulate General in Hong Kong. Hong Kong SAR is not a Hague Apostille Convention member; full consular authentication of Canadian-issued documents is required for use in the HKSAR.
