City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Portland, United States
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Portland. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Portland, Oregon has no direct trans-Atlantic cargo service. Every repatriation case from Portland requires a connecting leg — either north to Seattle (SEA, 3 hours by road or 50 minutes by air) or south to Los Angeles (LAX, 2 hours 30 minutes by air). This routing requirement is the first logistical fact to establish: which connecting hub best serves the specific flight schedule for the case. The funeral director’s cargo contacts and current BA and Virgin Atlantic schedules at both SEA and LAX will determine the recommendation.
What the British Consulate does — and does not do
The British Consulate General San Francisco covers Oregon. There is no British consular presence in Portland or anywhere else in Oregon.
The Consulate can: Register the death in UK consular records. Advise on documentation for UK authorities. Provide a funeral home list.
The Consulate cannot: Repatriate the body. Pay any costs. Instruct Oregon authorities.
FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
What Oregon law requires
Under Oregon Revised Statutes Chapter 146 (Medical Examiners), Oregon operates a state Medical Examiner system. The Multnomah County Medical Examiner (MCME) handles deaths in Portland and Multnomah County. Sudden, violent, unexplained, or suspicious deaths are referred to the MCME (2000 SW 1st Avenue, Portland OR 97201) for investigation and, where required, forensic post-mortem.
Oregon’s state ME system replaced the older elected-coroner model for larger counties. Death certificates are issued via the Oregon Vital Records Office (Oregon Center for Health Statistics, Oregon Health Authority).
The documentation chain
1. Oregon Death Certificate. Issued by the Oregon Health Authority via the licensed funeral home. Certified copies required.
2. MCME release (where applicable). Authorises body release after examination.
3. Oregon burial/transit permit. Arranged by the licensed Oregon funeral home.
4. Embalming certificate.
5. IATA airline cargo documentation.

Airport and cargo routing
Portland International Airport (PDX) has no direct LHR service. The two main cargo routing options are:
- Via Seattle (SEA): Road transfer north 3 hours, then SEA-LHR via British Airways or Virgin Atlantic
- Via Los Angeles (LAX): Air transfer south 2 hours 30 minutes, then LAX-LHR via British Airways
The funeral director selects the route based on cargo availability at the time of the case. SEA is generally the faster option for BC/PNW transfers.
Timeline from Portland
- Hospital-certified natural death: 7 to 14 days
- MCME investigation: 14 to 21 days
- Extended investigation: 4 to 8 weeks
Key local considerations
Portland is a city with strong outdoor recreation, music, and food tourism appeal. British visitors include Pacific Northwest explorers using Portland as a base for Mount Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, and Crater Lake. Deaths in the Mount Hood wilderness (Hood River County) are under Hood River County ME jurisdiction, not MCME.
