Repatriation from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Sharjah. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.

Repatriation from Sharjah to the UK typically takes 7 to 14 days for straightforward natural deaths. Where Sharjah Police become involved in investigation — which is mandatory for any death that is sudden, unattended, or in circumstances requiring clarification — the timeline extends to 14 to 28 days. The single most important fact for families to understand is that no repatriation from any emirate in the UAE can proceed without a police No Objection Certificate (NOC). This requirement applies in Sharjah as in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and every other emirate.

What drives timeline variation

Straightforward natural death (7–14 days): The death is certified at Sharjah’s government hospital. The police are notified and issue the NOC once their record is complete. The Ministry of Health issues the official death certificate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) attestation is applied to confirm the document’s validity for international use. This sequence — police, Ministry of Health, MOFA — cannot be shortened and runs 5 to 10 working days.

Police investigation case (14–28 days): Any death where cause is unclear, occurs outside a medical setting, or involves trauma triggers a Sharjah Police investigation. A government forensic post-mortem is conducted. The body remains in the government mortuary during this period. Families cannot access or move the deceased until the police file is closed and the NOC issued. Rush requests are not generally accepted.

Ramadan: During Ramadan, government offices including the Ministry of Health and MOFA operate reduced hours. Add 3 to 7 working days to any Ramadan timeline.

Sharjah Airport cargo and routing

Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) is the home base of Air Arabia, a low-cost carrier. Air Arabia does not carry human remains as cargo. Repatriations from Sharjah almost always route through Dubai International Airport (DXB), approximately 20 to 30 minutes by road. Dubai has far greater cargo infrastructure, with Emirates SkyCargo operating DXB-LHR and other UK-bound cargo services. The licensed Sharjah funeral director arranges the DXB transfer.

Some cases route via Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) if Emirates cargo space is constrained, though this is less common.

Documentation required for export from Sharjah (departing DXB):

  • UAE Ministry of Health death certificate (MOFA attested)
  • Sharjah Police NOC
  • Embalming certificate
  • No-objection letter from the British Consulate General Dubai
  • Airline cargo booking confirmation (DXB-LHR)
  • Passport of the deceased

British consular contacts

The British Consulate General in Dubai covers Sharjah for consular purposes (British Embassy Abu Dhabi covers the UAE federally). For Sharjah-based deaths, the Dubai Consulate General manages documentary assistance. The Consulate can issue a no-objection letter which UAE authorities sometimes require for export. Key local considerations

Sharjah is the most conservative of the seven emirates. Alcohol is prohibited in Sharjah. Deaths involving alcohol found in the deceased’s system can complicate the police process and extend the timeline, as this may be treated as a violation of local law in the investigation records.

Sharjah has a large British and South Asian expatriate workforce. Deaths among working expatriates — particularly from natural causes in shared accommodation or workplace settings — are handled through the same police/Ministry of Health/MOFA sequence as tourist deaths.
