Repatriation from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Port of Spain. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Trinidad and Tobago presents a two-island configuration with distinct characteristics. Trinidad (the larger, southern island, containing Port of Spain, the capital, and Piarco International Airport) is the administrative, legal, and medical hub. Tobago (the smaller northern island, approximately 30km by ferry or 15 minutes by air) is the tourism island — beach resorts, diving, and nature tourism. Deaths on Tobago require a transfer to Trinidad for any post-mortem or complex legal processing.
The British-Trinidadian diaspora is the primary driver of repatriation cases. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 people of Trinidadian and Tobagonian heritage live in the United Kingdom. Deaths of British nationals visiting extended family in Trinidad — not Tobago resort deaths — represent the majority of cases, and they carry the estate complexity familiar from other high-diaspora destinations.
What the British High Commission does — and does not do
The British High Commission Port of Spain (19 St. Clair Avenue, St. Clair, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) is the resident consular post for Trinidad and Tobago.
The BHC can: Register the death in UK consular records. Advise on documentation requirements. Provide a funeral director referral list.
The BHC cannot: Repatriate the body. Pay any costs. Instruct Trinidadian authorities.
FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
What Trinidad and Tobago law requires
Under the Coroners Act Chapter 6:03 (Trinidad and Tobago), sudden, unnatural, or unexplained deaths are reported to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and referred to a Coroner for an inquest where required. Post-mortems are conducted by the Forensic Sciences Centre (formerly the Forensic Science Laboratory), FSC, #9 Queen’s Park West, Port of Spain, Trinidad, which is the national forensic pathology facility. Deaths on Tobago are referred to the FSC in Trinidad.
Death certificates are issued by the Registrar General’s Department, Trinidad and Tobago.
The documentation chain

Airport and cargo routing
Piarco International Airport (POS), on Trinidad, has British Airways POS-LHR direct service. This is the cargo departure point for all repatriation cases — including deaths on Tobago, which require the inter-island transfer to Trinidad before the international leg. The Crown Point International Airport (TAB) on Tobago handles regional services only. All international cargo for repatriation departs from POS Trinidad.
Timeline from Trinidad and Tobago
- Hospital-certified natural death on Trinidad: 7 to 14 days
- Tobago death plus Trinidad transfer: adds 2 to 4 days
- Coroner’s inquest: 14 to 28 days
- Extended investigation: 4 to 8 weeks
Key local considerations
Trinidad’s Carnival (February/March) is attended by large numbers of British visitors of Trinidadian heritage. The high-energy environment, heat, alcohol consumption, and physical exertion create an elevated risk period for cardiac events. Deaths during Carnival week can face a short additional delay due to the temporary disruption to normal administrative and medical services.
