City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Dar es Salaam. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest city and commercial capital, and the administrative hub through which virtually all Tanzanian repatriations to the UK must pass. British nationals in Dar es Salaam include development sector workers, NGO and UN agency staff, business professionals, and a smaller group of long-stay residents. Deaths occurring elsewhere in Tanzania (the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Mwanza on Lake Victoria) will at some point require documentation to be processed in Dar es Salaam, even if the initial registration takes place in the region where the death occurred.
This makes Dar es Salaam the practical centre of gravity for any Tanzania repatriation, regardless of where the death happened.
Consular coverage
The British High Commission Dar es Salaam (Umoja House, Garden Avenue, Dar es Salaam) is the UK diplomatic mission for Tanzania, including Zanzibar. BHC Dar es Salaam handles all consular matters for deaths in mainland Tanzania.
British High Commission Dar es Salaam: +255 22 229 0000. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
What Tanzanian law requires
Registration of Vital Statistics (Births and Deaths Registration) Ordinance (Cap. 108): Deaths must be notified to the Registrar of Births and Deaths within 7 days on the mainland. The registrar for Dar es Salaam falls under the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA), the national agency that administers civil registration.
Tanzania Police Force: Sudden and unexplained deaths must be reported to the Tanzania Police Force. The Dar es Salaam Region Police Command handles deaths in the city. Investigation cases are referred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH): MNH (United Nations Road, Upanga, Dar es Salaam) is the national referral hospital and the main forensic pathology centre for Tanzania. Post-mortems for deaths across Tanzania are typically conducted here, including cases transferred from regional hospitals. The MNH Forensic Pathology Unit is the main facility.
Ministry of Health permit to export: Required under Tanzanian Public Health regulations before international transport can take place.

Hospital coverage
Muhimbili National Hospital is the largest public hospital. The private sector in Dar es Salaam includes Aga Khan Hospital (Kipande Road, Upanga), which is the primary hospital for British nationals with comprehensive travel insurance and for expat-community patients. Sea Cliff Hospital (Toure Drive, Masaki) is a smaller private facility. Serious cases from upcountry Tanzania are often evacuated to Nairobi (Aga Khan Hospital Nairobi or Nairobi Hospital) rather than treated in Dar es Salaam.
The documentation chain
1. Tanzania Police Force report (in sudden/unexplained deaths). 2. Medical death certificate from treating physician or MNH forensic pathology. 3. Death registration with RITA registrar, Dar es Salaam. 4. DCI clearance (if investigation is opened). 5. Ministry of Health export permit. 6. Embalming certificate. 7. IATA cargo documentation — DAR (Julius Nyerere International Airport) to LHR.
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) is the main international cargo airport in Tanzania. Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa) and Kenya Airways (via Nairobi) operate connections to LHR. British Airways does not currently operate a DAR-LHR direct route; all UK cargo routes involve a connection.
