Repatriation from Ibiza, Spain

Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Ibiza. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is the starting point for repatriations from the Balearic island. It is a mid-sized international airport with direct summer charter and scheduled flights to UK airports including London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester, and Birmingham. This direct connectivity is one of the few logistical advantages for families dealing with a death on the island.

Ibiza Airport cargo and direct UK flights

The most significant practical asset for Ibiza repatriations is the availability of direct summer flights to multiple UK airports. Jet2, TUI, easyJet, and British Airways all operate IBZ routes. However, full-service carriers with dedicated cargo handling — specifically British Airways or Vueling connecting to Madrid Barajas for onward Iberia or BA cargo — are required for repatriation. Low-cost carriers do not carry human remains.

Some Ibiza cases route via Palma de Mallorca (PMI, approximately 45 minutes by road and ferry, or 20 minutes by air) for the cargo leg, as Palma has a larger cargo infrastructure and more UK-bound carrier options. The funeral director in Ibiza advises on the most practical routing case by case.

Spanish Juzgado de Instrucción process

Deaths in Ibiza that are unexpected, sudden, unexplained, or occur in traumatic circumstances are referred to the Juzgado de Instrucción — the examining magistrate’s court — rather than directly to civil registration. The Juzgado orders a judicial autopsy (autopsia médico-forense) before releasing the body. This step is mandatory in Spain for any death without a clear, physician-certified natural cause.

Once the Juzgado releases the body (resolución de sobreseimiento or levantamiento del cadáver), the death is registered at the Registro Civil in Ibiza. The Registro Civil issues the Spanish death certificate. Certified copies are required for UK repatriation.

Timeline: Straightforward natural deaths certified by physician — 3 to 7 working days for registration and certificate. Juzgado cases: 2 to 4 weeks. Where a full judicial investigation is required (criminal cause suspected): allow 6 weeks or more.

High season volume

Ibiza processes a disproportionately high volume of tourist deaths relative to its permanent population, concentrated in the summer months (June to September). The Juzgado and Registro Civil offices in Ibiza are small by Spanish standards. Processing times can extend in high season, particularly August when staffing levels are reduced.

Documentation for export from Ibiza

  • Spanish death certificate (Registro Civil certified copy)
  • Juzgado release document (if applicable)
  • Spanish Licencia de enterramiento or export authorisation
  • Embalming certificate
  • Freedom from infection certificate
  • Airline cargo booking confirmation
  • Passport of the deceased

British consular contacts

The British Consulate General in Palma de Mallorca covers the Balearic Islands. For Ibiza deaths, the Palma consulate handles documentary assistance and death registration. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.

Typical timeline from Ibiza

Direct cargo route, no Juzgado involvement: 7 to 14 days. Juzgado case (most cases): 14 to 28 days. Complex or criminally investigated: allow 6 weeks or more.

Key local considerations

Drug-related deaths are disproportionately common in Ibiza during the summer club season. These cases almost always involve the Juzgado de Instrucción and toxicological analysis. Families in this situation should expect a minimum of 4 to 8 weeks before the body can be repatriated, regardless of other factors.

British travel insurance coverage is critical here. Policies that include repatriation cover should be claimed as early as possible; some insurers have preferred repatriation firms in Spain and will not reimburse costs if a different firm is used without prior authorisation.
