City repatriation guide

Repatriation from Cascais, Portugal

Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Cascais. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.

Cascais is a coastal town 30 kilometres west of Lisbon. Its proximity to Lisbon Airport makes the cargo logistics straightforward — it is one of the simpler repatriation origins in Portugal from a transport perspective. The documentation, however, follows the same national Portuguese system as every other location and cannot be abbreviated regardless of the airport’s proximity.

The Portuguese documentation chain

1. Certidão de óbito from the Conservatória do Registo Civil de Cascais. The death is registered at the Cascais civil registry. Processing time: 3 to 7 working days. Certified copies (certidão) are required — an uncertified copy is not accepted.

2. Ministério Público. Deaths that are sudden, unattended, violent, or whose cause is uncertain are referred to the Ministério Público. The relevant office for Cascais is at the Tribunal de Cascais. If an autopsia médico-legal is ordered, it is conducted by the INML (Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal e Ciências Forenses) at the Lisbon forensic institute. Cascais is well within Lisbon’s forensic infrastructure range. Timeline for Ministério Público cases: 2 to 4 weeks.

3. Certificado de transporte internacional. Issued by the Cascais or Lisbon district health authority in conjunction with the funeral director, this authorises international transport of the body.

4. Embalming certificate. Required for air transport from Portugal.

5. Freedom from infection certificate.

6. IATA cargo documentation. Prepared by the licensed funeral director for the Lisbon Airport handover.

Lisbon Airport cargo

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is 30 kilometres east of Cascais — approximately 35 to 45 minutes by road. British Airways operates LIS-LHR direct; TAP Air Portugal cargo also covers this route. The LIS cargo terminal handles human remains regularly. The licensed Cascais funeral director manages the airport handover.

Timeline from Cascais

  • Natural death, no Ministério Público: 7 to 14 days
  • Ministério Público case: 14 to 28 days
  • Complex investigation: allow 4 to 6 weeks

Key local considerations

Cascais and the Estoril coast have a substantial British resident community and attract British tourists drawn to its beaches and golf courses. The area has a higher concentration of retired British expats than most Portuguese coastal towns, and deaths among this community form a significant portion of UK repatriations from the region.

Water-related deaths on the exposed Atlantic beaches west of Cascais (Praia do Guincho, Praia de Carcavelos) involve the Ministério Público. The Atlantic swell conditions at Guincho in particular create strong undertow risks.
