City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Azores, Portugal
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Azores. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
The Azores are a Portuguese autonomous region in the mid-Atlantic, approximately 1,500 kilometres west of Lisbon. Repatriation from the Azores to the UK requires the same documentation as mainland Portugal, but the archipelago’s remoteness means the practical logistics involve one additional transit stage that does not apply to Lisbon or Algarve cases.
The Portuguese documentation chain
1. Certidão de óbito from the Conservatória do Registo Civil. The death is registered at the local Conservatória do Registo Civil on whichever island the death occurred. For Ponta Delgada (São Miguel Island), this is the Conservatória in the city centre. For Terceira (Angra do Heroísmo) or Faial (Horta), the relevant island registry office issues the certificate. Processing: 3 to 10 working days.
2. Ministério Público. Sudden, unexplained, or violent deaths are referred to the Ministério Público (public prosecutor). The relevant Ministério Público for the Azores operates from Ponta Delgada. If an autopsia médico-legal is ordered, it is conducted at the forensic medicine service (INML — Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal e Ciências Forenses). For deaths on outer islands, the body may need to be transferred to São Miguel for the autopsy, adding 1 to 3 days. Timeline for Ministério Público cases: 2 to 4 weeks additional.
3. Certificado de transporte internacional. Issued by the Azorean regional health authority and the funeral director, this document authorises international transport of remains. It is the Portuguese equivalent of the French laissez-passer mortuaire and must accompany the body throughout its journey.
4. Embalming certificate. Required for air transport.
5. Freedom from infection certificate.

Airport and cargo routing — the Lisbon transit
João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada (PDL) operates direct flights to London, but these are typically seasonal passenger services rather than year-round cargo-capable UK routes. For repatriation purposes, the standard routing is:
- Domestic flight PDL to Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), approximately 2 hours
- International cargo LIS-LHR via British Airways or TAP Air Portugal cargo
TAP operates direct LIS-LHR cargo. British Airways also covers this route. The Lisbon leg adds one working day of logistics.
For deaths on outer Azores islands (Terceira, Faial, Pico, Flores, Corvo), an additional inter-island flight to São Miguel first is required, adding further time.
British consular contacts
The British Embassy in Lisbon (Rua de São Bernardo 33) covers the Azores. There is no British consular presence on any Azorean island. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Timeline from the Azores
- Natural death, no Ministério Público: 14 to 21 days (including Lisbon transit)
- Ministério Público case: 4 to 6 weeks
- Outer island case (inter-island transfer required): add 2 to 4 days
Key local considerations
The Azores attract hiking and outdoor tourism, whale watching, and increasingly, British long-haul travellers seeking unspoilt Atlantic scenery. The island terrain — volcanic, with active fumaroles on São Miguel — and the Atlantic swell conditions for maritime activities contribute to a range of incident types.
Flores and Corvo are the most remote islands in the archipelago. Deaths there involve inter-island air transfer to Terceira or São Miguel before the mainland Lisbon leg. Allow at least 3 additional days for these cases.
