City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Yangon, Myanmar
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Yangon. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Yangon is Myanmar’s largest city and its commercial capital, though not the administrative capital (that is Naypyidaw, a planned city 300km north). Before the military coup of February 2021, Yangon was a growing destination for British business travellers, NGO workers, and a small but increasing tourist market. Since the coup, the security situation has deteriorated significantly. The FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel to Myanmar.
British nationals who die in Myanmar today are most likely to be: people who were already resident before the coup and have remained; aid workers, journalists, or security professionals operating under essential travel; or, in very rare cases, tourists who entered despite the current FCDO advisory.
Before reading further: If you are dealing with a death in Myanmar now, contact the FCDO 24-hour emergency line immediately. The situation on the ground is not static, and the consular capacity available in Yangon is limited.

Consular coverage
The British Embassy Yangon (80 Strand Road, Yangon) maintains a presence, though its operational capacity has been reduced since the 2021 coup. The Embassy provides emergency consular services but may have limited staff available for complex cases. Families should not assume standard response times.

What Myanmar law requires
The Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1952 (Burma): Deaths must be registered with the local Township Registration Office (under the General Administration Department, Ministry of Home Affairs). The Death Certificate (ဆုံးပါးကြောင်း လက်မှတ်) is issued at township level.
Myanmar Police Force (MPF) and township administration: Sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are reported to the Township Police. Under the current military government (State Administration Council, SAC), the institutional chain has been reorganised since the coup. In practice, the Township Administrator and Township Police Station are the first contacts. The Forensic Medicine Department under the Ministry of Health handles post-mortems; the department continues to operate in Yangon hospitals including Yangon General Hospital.
Ministry of Health permit for international transport: Myanmar’s Ministry of Health (under SAC) issues the permit for international transport of human remains. Processing times and access to the Ministry can be unpredictable given the current political situation.

Medical coverage
Yangon General Hospital (Bogyoke Aung San Road) and Yangon Specialist Hospital remain the main public hospitals. Asia Royal Hospital (Baho Road) and Pun Hlaing Siloam Hospital (previously operated as an international hospital) are the private options in Yangon. The international medical facility network in Myanmar has contracted significantly since the coup; some foreign-run medical services have closed or reduced operations.
The documentation chain
1. Death registration at Township Registration Office. 2. Township Police report (in sudden deaths). 3. Forensic Medicine Department post-mortem (if required). 4. Ministry of Health international transport permit. 5. Embalming certificate. 6. IATA cargo documentation — RGN (Yangon International Airport) to LHR via Bangkok (BKK), Singapore (SIN), or Kuala Lumpur (KUL).
Yangon International Airport (RGN) has limited international connections following the coup. Most cargo routes go via Bangkok (Thai Airways or Myanmar Airways International), Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur, then onward to LHR.

Timelines are highly variable under current conditions and cannot be stated with confidence. Under normal circumstances (pre-2021), a natural death in Yangon typically took 14 to 21 days. Under current conditions, allow for significantly longer and plan for administrative delays at every stage.
