Repatriation from Petra, Jordan
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Petra. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Petra is Jordan’s most-visited archaeological site, receiving hundreds of thousands of international tourists each year, including a significant proportion of British visitors. The site is in the Ma’an Governorate, approximately 240km south of Amman. Deaths in Petra and the surrounding Wadi Rum and Aqaba region are primarily associated with heat illness (the Siq and the main trail are exposed and extremely hot from May through September), physical exertion at altitude (ad-Deir, the Monastery trail involves over 800 steps), falls on uneven ancient stone, and heart events in older visitors.
Deaths here are less common than in beach resorts, but they do happen. The documentation chain runs through Amman in most cases, and British families are typically dealing with a 3 to 4 hour gap between where the death occurred and where the administrative process is handled.
Consular coverage
The British Embassy Amman (Abdoun, Amman) is responsible for all of Jordan. There is no British consular presence in Petra, Aqaba, or Ma’an. All formal consular engagement goes through the Embassy in Amman.

What Jordanian law requires
The Jordanian Penal Procedure Law and the Civil Status Law (Law No. 9 of 2001): Sudden deaths must be reported to the Jordan Police. In Petra, the Petra Police Station handles initial notifications. Unexplained or potentially criminal deaths are referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ma’an.
Post-mortem examination: Forensic post-mortems are conducted at the National Institute for Forensic Medicine (NIFM) in Amman, or at the Aqaba Government Hospital forensic facility for cases in the southern region. The Ma’an Governorate may refer to either, depending on circumstances.
Death certificate: Issued by the Civil Status Directorate (Dairat al-Ahwal al-Madaniyya) under the Ministry of Interior. The death must be registered at the local Civil Status office, which for Petra falls under the Wadi Musa registration office.
Permit to repatriate (Ijazat Naql al-Jasad): Issued by the Jordan Ministry of Health once cause of death is confirmed, the death certificate is issued, and a police clearance is obtained.

Medical facilities near Petra
Queen Rania Al Abdullah Hospital (Wadi Musa, Petra) is the local public hospital. It provides basic acute care, but serious cases are transferred to Ma’an Public Hospital or to a hospital in Amman (King Hussein Medical Centre or Jordan University Hospital). Heat illness and cardiac events at the site are treated at the Petra First Aid Station maintained by the Petra Regional Authority inside the archaeological park.
The documentation chain
1. Police report from Petra Police Station. 2. Post-mortem clearance from forensic examiner (NIFM Amman or Aqaba). 3. Death certificate from Wadi Musa Civil Status office. 4. Ministry of Health permit to repatriate. 5. Embalming certificate (Islamic law generally prohibits embalming; waiver or alternative documentation for non-Muslim foreigners). 6. IATA cargo documentation — AMM (Queen Alia International Airport, 250km north) to LHR.
Most UK-bound repatriations from Jordan cargo through Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), Amman. Royal Jordanian operates AMM-LHR direct (approximately 5 hours). Funeral directors in Amman with international repatriation experience manage the full documentation chain and cargo.
