City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Montego Bay, Jamaica
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Montego Bay. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Montego Bay is Jamaica’s second city and the major tourism hub — Sangster International Airport, the resort strip between Ironshore and Falmouth, and the all-inclusive hotels that draw large numbers of British visitors annually. But the death caseload in Montego Bay reflects more than tourism. There are an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 people of Jamaican heritage in the United Kingdom. Deaths of British nationals of Jamaican origin visiting family in St. James Parish, Westmoreland, Hanover, and the western parishes are common cases, often more complex than resort deaths: family homes, Jamaican estates, community ties, and longer stays. These are diaspora cases, not package-holiday cases.
What the British High Commission does — and does not do
The British High Commission Kingston (28 Trafalgar Road, Kingston 10, Jamaica) covers all of Jamaica. There is no resident British consul in Montego Bay; all cases are managed through Kingston.
The BHC can: Register the death in UK consular records. Advise on Jamaican documentation requirements. Provide a funeral director referral list.
The BHC cannot: Repatriate the body. Pay any costs. Instruct Jamaican authorities.

What Jamaican law requires
Under the Coroners Act Jamaica (Chapter 24:02), sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) St. James Division (Montego Bay), and where an inquest is required, the case is referred to the Coroner’s Court. Post-mortems are conducted by a Government Pathologist. The Government Pathologist office is based in Kingston — a road transfer of approximately 180km from Montego Bay. This pathologist transfer adds time to cases requiring forensic examination.
Death certificates are issued by the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) of Jamaica.
The documentation chain
1. Jamaican Death Certificate. Issued by the RGD Jamaica through the registrar of the relevant parish.
2. Coroner’s clearance (where applicable, and following inquest if required).
3. Police release confirmation (in sudden death cases).
4. International transport permit. Issued by the Ministry of Health and Wellness Jamaica, Office of the Chief Medical Officer.
5. Embalming certificate.
6. IATA cargo documentation.

Airport and cargo routing
Sangster International Airport Montego Bay (MBJ) has British Airways MBJ-LHR direct service with regular frequency. This is the primary cargo route. The funeral director manages cargo documentation for the MBJ-LHR leg. For deaths in the western parishes further from Montego Bay — Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland, Lucea in Hanover — road transfer to MBJ is the first step.
Timeline from Montego Bay
- Hospital-certified natural death: 7 to 14 days
- Coroner’s inquest process: 14 to 28 days
- Government Pathologist involvement (Kingston transfer): adds 5 to 10 days
- Extended investigation: 4 to 10 weeks
Key local considerations
St. James Parish, which contains Montego Bay, has had declared States of Public Emergency in recent years due to violent crime levels. Crime-related deaths — which can affect British visitors in resort areas outside the hotel compounds as well as in residential areas — trigger the full inquest process and typically extend timelines significantly.
British nationals of Jamaican heritage who die while visiting family may hold Jamaican land or property inherited from parents or grandparents. Jamaican land title law is a distinct area; the repatriation proceeds independently, but the family should instruct a Jamaican attorney for any land or estate matters.
