Repatriation from Rishikesh, India

Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Rishikesh. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.

Rishikesh, in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, sits at the foothills of the Himalayas where the Ganges emerges from the mountains onto the plains. It is one of the most visited towns in India for British travellers on spiritual and wellness itineraries. The yoga ashrams, meditation centres, and the International Yoga Festival have established Rishikesh’s international reputation to the point that it is often referred to as the “yoga capital of the world.” White-water rafting on the Ganges and bungee operations at Mohan Chatti are substantial adventure tourism draws.

The Ganga cremation warning. This is one of the most important facts for British families to understand about deaths in Rishikesh. The Ganges ghats in Rishikesh — particularly at Triveni Ghat, Ram Jhula, and Laxman Jhula — are active cremation sites. Under local Hindu custom and the requests of many international yoga or spiritual tourists themselves, families or ashram contacts may arrange cremation on the ghats within hours of death without formal documentation. Once a body is cremated, repatriation of human remains to the UK becomes a fundamentally different process. The cremated remains (ashes) can usually still be repatriated, but the body cannot. If your loved one has died in Rishikesh and you wish to repatriate the body to the UK, you must act immediately to prevent any unauthorised cremation. Contact us and the British Deputy High Commission at once.

Consular coverage

The British Deputy High Commission Chandigarh (SCO 17-18, Sector 17E, Chandigarh, Punjab) covers Uttarakhand, including Rishikesh. The British High Commission New Delhi provides broader consular support.

What Indian law requires

Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023 (which replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973 from 1 July 2024): All sudden, violent, and unexplained deaths are reported to the local police. In Rishikesh, this is Rishikesh Police Station under the Uttarakhand Police. Unnatural deaths require an inquest under Section 176 of the BNSS.

Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969: Deaths are registered at the local registrar’s office. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Tehri Garhwal (for Garhwal district cases) or the CMO Dehradun is involved in the certification and NOC chain.

Forensic post-mortem: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar Garhwal (about 100km from Rishikesh) or AIIMS Rishikesh (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Virbhadra Road, Rishikesh — a major hospital complex) handles post-mortems. AIIMS Rishikesh has a Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.

No Objection Certificate (NOC) and DGMHS permit: The Directorate General of Medical Health Services (DGMHS), Uttarakhand, issues the international transport NOC. The CMO Tehri Garhwal or CMO Dehradun issues the preliminary NOC for foreign nationals. ICMR and embalming standards must be met.

Medical coverage

AIIMS Rishikesh (All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Virbhadra Road) is a national-level teaching hospital and the best facility in the region. Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS, Dehradun) is the alternative. Smaller hospitals and clinics in Rishikesh town serve routine cases. For adventure injuries (rafting, bungee), transfer to AIIMS Rishikesh is standard.

The documentation chain

1. FIR (First Information Report) at Rishikesh Police Station (sudden/violent deaths). 2. Inquest under BNSS Section 176 by the police/magistrate. 3. Post-mortem at AIIMS Rishikesh Department of Forensic Medicine (standard for all foreign nationals in suspicious or sudden deaths). 4. Death registration with local registrar and issuance of death certificate. 5. CMO Tehri Garhwal / CMO Dehradun NOC. 6. DGMHS Uttarakhand international transport permit. 7. Embalming to ICMR standards at a recognised mortuary (Dehradun or Rishikesh). 8.
