Repatriation from Nadi, Fiji

Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Nadi. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.

Fiji’s 330 islands span 1.3 million square kilometres of the South Pacific. Deaths here present a geography problem. Nadi, on the western coast of Viti Levu (Fiji’s main island), is the international gateway. But British visitors are distributed across a wide area: the Coral Coast resorts, the Mamanuca Islands (accessible by boat or seaplane from Nadi), the Yasawa Islands (further north), and the Vanua Levu island to the north-east. Deaths on outer islands require inter-island transfer to Nadi or Suva before the mainland documentation chain can begin. The Fijian Government Pathologist is based in Suva — a 4-hour drive from Nadi or a short flight — meaning that cases requiring post-mortem involve a further transfer within Fiji.

What the British High Commission does — and does not do

The British High Commission Suva (47 Gladstone Road, Suva, Fiji) is the resident consular post for Fiji.

The BHC can: Register the death in UK consular records. Advise on Fijian documentation requirements for UK authorities. Provide a funeral director referral list.

The BHC cannot: Repatriate the body. Pay any costs. Instruct Fijian legal authorities.

What Fijian law requires

Under the Coroners Act 1959 (Fiji, Cap. 24), sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are reported to the Fiji Police Force and referred to the Coroner. Post-mortems are conducted by the Government Pathologist, located at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (Ratu Sukuna Road, Suva). Deaths in Nadi and the west of Viti Levu are investigated under the jurisdiction of the Western Division, but post-mortems are conducted in Suva.

Death certificates are issued by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry, Fiji.

The documentation chain

1. Fijian Death Certificate. Issued by the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry.

2. Coroner’s clearance (where applicable in sudden or unnatural deaths).

3. Police release confirmation.

4. International export permit. Issued by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Fiji.

5. Embalming certificate.

6. IATA cargo documentation — covering the domestic Nadi-to-hub leg and the international leg.

Airport and cargo routing

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is the international gateway. NAN has no direct service to London. Standard routing: NAN to Sydney (SYD, approximately 3.5 hours) on Fiji Airways or Qantas, then SYD-LHR Qantas or British Airways direct. Alternatively: NAN to Singapore (SIN, approximately 9 hours) then SIN-LHR British Airways. The funeral director selects the best cargo route. For deaths in Suva or the Central Division, Nausori Airport (SUV) is closer, but international cargo departs from NAN.

Timeline from Fiji

  • Hospital-certified natural death in Nadi area: 10 to 18 days
  • Outer-island transfer plus Suva post-mortem: adds 3 to 7 days
  • Coroner’s investigation: 21 to 35 days

Key local considerations

The Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands resort deaths involving British visitors typically require a boat or seaplane transfer to Nadi as the first step. Weather conditions in the cyclone season (November to April) can delay inter-island transfers. Fiji is in a major cyclone track; deaths during or immediately after a cyclone — which may involve evacuation logistics — present additional complexity.
