City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Hvar, Croatia
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Hvar. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Hvar is Croatia’s most glamorous island destination, popular with British visitors for its combination of nightlife, beach clubs, medieval old town, and sailing charters. It is a major destination for stag and hen parties, as well as for upmarket leisure tourism. The island of Hvar sits in the Split-Dalmatia County; access is by ferry from Split (approximately 1 hour to Stari Grad) or by fast catamaran (approximately 1 hour to Hvar Town).
The island character of Hvar creates a specific challenge in a repatriation. Everything must leave by sea or air before the documentation process on the mainland (Split) can fully begin. British families dealing with a death on Hvar should expect a delay simply from the logistics of reaching Split, the county seat and nearest mainland city.
Consular coverage
The British Embassy Zagreb (Ivana Lučića 4, 10000 Zagreb) is the UK diplomatic mission for Croatia. The British Honorary Consul Split provides local assistance for the Dalmatian region including Hvar; however, formal consular documentation goes through the Embassy in Zagreb.
British Embassy Zagreb: +385 1 600 9100. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
What Croatian law requires
Act on State Registers (Zakon o državnim maticama, Official Gazette 96/1993 and amendments): Deaths must be registered in the State Register of Deaths (Matica umrlih) by the local registrar. For Hvar Town and Stari Grad, the relevant State Register office is the Hvar Municipality or Stari Grad Municipality office. The death certificate (izvadak iz matice umrlih) is issued here.
Croatian Police (Ministarstvo unutarnjih poslova, MUP Croatia) — Split-Dalmatia Police Administration (PU Splitsko-dalmatinska): Sudden, unexpected, or violent deaths are reported to the PU Splitsko-dalmatinska. For the island of Hvar, the Hvar Police Station handles initial notifications; the investigation is coordinated with Split.
Forensic pathology: Croatia’s forensic pathology is organised regionally. The relevant facility for deaths on Hvar is the Forensic Medicine Department at the University Clinical Hospital Split (KBC Split, Spinčićeva 1, Split). Post-mortems are ordered by the County Court (Županijski sud) or Municipal State Attorney’s Office in Split.
Permit for international transport: Under the Act on Handling of Dead Bodies (Zakon o postupanju s pokojnicima) and associated Ministry of Health regulations, a permit from the county authority (Splitsko-dalmatinska Županija, Ministry of Health section) is required for international transport.

Medical coverage
Hvar Health Centre (Dom zdravlja Hvarski) provides primary care on the island. There is no hospital with full acute capability on Hvar. Emergencies (including diving accidents and trauma) require evacuation to Split — by ferry (1 hour minimum) or by helicopter (Croatian Mountain Rescue helicopter or Solin Air Base military helicopter in extreme cases). KBC Split (Spinčićeva 1, Split) is the regional hospital and trauma centre and handles all serious cases for the Dalmatian islands.
The documentation chain
1. Death registered at Hvar or Stari Grad Municipality State Register office. 2. Police report from Hvar Police Station and PU Splitsko-dalmatinska. 3. Post-mortem at KBC Split Forensic Medicine (if ordered by County Court or State Attorney). 4. County permit for international transport from Splitsko-dalmatinska Županija. 5. Embalming certificate. 6. IATA cargo documentation — SPU (Split Airport, Kaštela, 24km from Split) to LHR.
Split Airport (SPU, Resnik, Kaštela) has direct services to London Gatwick (LGW) via easyJet and British Airways seasonal routes. Flight time approximately 2.5 hours. Cargo for repatriation is handled at Split Airport’s cargo facility.
