City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Bogotá, Colombia
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Bogotá. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Bogotá is Colombia’s capital and, at 2,600 metres above sea level, one of the world’s highest major cities. It is the administrative, commercial, and judicial hub of Colombia and the transit point for virtually all UK-Colombia repatriations. British nationals in Bogotá include business travellers in the oil, mining, and tech sectors; NGO and development workers; academic and cultural exchange visitors; and a small but growing tourism population drawn by Bogotá’s reputation as a gastronomy and cultural destination. Deaths from elsewhere in Colombia (Cartagena, the Coffee Region, Amazon basin) will almost always route documentation through Bogotá.
Altitude is a practical consideration beyond just the documentation chain. Sudden illness at 2,600 metres, including acute coronary events, can be exacerbated by altitude in visitors who are not acclimatised. This is not common, but it is a documented contributor to deaths in high-altitude cities.
Consular coverage
The British Embassy Bogotá (Carrera 9, No. 76-49, Piso 9, Bogotá) is the UK diplomatic mission for Colombia. Emergency consular assistance for deaths anywhere in Colombia goes through the Embassy.

What Colombian law requires
Decreto 1260 de 1970 (Estatuto del Registro Civil): Deaths must be registered at the Notaría or the Oficina de Registro del Estado Civil. The registering authority issues the civil death registration (Acta de Defunción). In Bogotá, this is handled through the Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil via the relevant notary.
Fiscalía General de la Nación and SIJÍN (Judicial Police): Sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are investigated by the Fiscalía (Public Prosecutor) and SIJÍN (Seccional de Investigación Judicial), the judicial police. The Fiscalía orders forensic post-mortems through the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal.
Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses (INMLCF, Diagonal 51 No. 19-09, Bogotá): The national forensic institution for Colombia. It conducts post-mortems for Bogotá and is the reference institution for all departments. It operates under the Fiscalía General de la Nación.
INVIMA / Ministry of Foreign Affairs permit: International transport of human remains requires a health permit from the Secretaría Distrital de Salud de Bogotá (for deaths in Bogotá) and a no-objection from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the international dimension.

Medical coverage
Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá (Calle 119 No. 7-75) and Clínica del Country (Carrera 16 No. 82-57) are the private hospitals most commonly used by insured foreigners and British nationals in Bogotá. Hospital Universitario Nacional de Colombia (Carrera 30 No. 45-03) and Hospital Simón Bolívar are the main public referral hospitals. The British Embassy maintains a list of recommended medical providers.
The documentation chain
1. Acta de Defunción from Registraduría / Notaría. 2. SIJÍN report from judicial police (in sudden deaths). 3. Post-mortem from INMLCF (if ordered by Fiscalía). 4. Fiscalía release of the body. 5. Secretaría Distrital de Salud health permit. 6. Ministry of Foreign Affairs no-objection. 7. Embalming certificate. 8. IATA cargo documentation — BOG (El Dorado International Airport) to LHR.
El Dorado International Airport (BOG) is Colombia’s main international airport. British Airways operates BOG-LHR direct (approximately 11.5 hours). Avianca and other carriers also connect BOG to European hubs.
