Repatriation from Beijing, China
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Beijing. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Repatriation from China is among the most document-intensive processes British families encounter. China’s bureaucratic requirements for international transport of human remains involve multiple government departments, and all official documents are issued exclusively in Chinese. Certified translations and consular authentication at multiple stages are standard requirements. Begin the process immediately upon death notification.
What Chinese law requires
Under Chinese public security and civil affairs regulations, any sudden or unexplained death must be reported to the Public Security Bureau (公安局, Gong An Ju). The PSB attends and determines whether a criminal investigation or forensic examination is required. In Beijing, the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau (北京市公安局) holds jurisdiction.
For deaths in hospital with a clear medical cause certified by the treating physician, PSB involvement is limited to notification. For unexplained deaths, the PSB forensic medicine unit (法医室) conducts an official examination.
The documentation chain
1. 死亡证明书 (Siwang Zhengmingshu — Death certificate). Issued by the treating hospital or the PSB forensic department, depending on circumstances.
2. 户籍注销证明 (Household registration cancellation). Required for Chinese citizens; for foreign nationals (British), this step is replaced by notification to the British Embassy.
3. 死亡公证书 (Notarised death certificate). The death certificate must be notarised at a Chinese Notary Office (公证处). Beijing has several authorised notary offices. This is a mandatory step that UK authorities and airlines require.
4. 卫生检疫证明 (Health quarantine certificate). Issued by Chinese customs and quarantine authorities for international transport of human remains.
5. 出境许可 (Exit permit for human remains). Issued by the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau (北京市民政局) and the local District Civil Affairs office.
6. Embalming certificate. Required for air transport; arranged by the licensed Beijing funeral director.
7. IATA airline cargo documentation.

Airport and cargo routing
Beijing is served by two international airports:
- Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK): Major hub. British Airways operates PEK-LHR direct.
- Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX): Newer airport, south of the city.
For repatriation cargo, PEK is the established route. British Airways cargo PEK-LHR is the standard option.
British consular contacts
The British Embassy Beijing is at 11 Guanghua Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing 100600. The consular section handles all British national death registrations. FCDO 24-hour emergency line: +44 (0)20 7008 5000.
Timeline from Beijing
- Hospital-certified death: 14 to 21 days (notarisation and exit permit processing)
- PSB forensic case: 3 to 6 weeks
- Extended PSB investigation: 6 to 12 weeks
Key local considerations
Beijing has a significant British diplomatic, academic, and business community. Business traveller deaths and deaths among long-term residents are the primary repatriation categories. Tourist deaths are less common in Beijing than in coastal resort destinations.
All official documents are in Mandarin Chinese. Certified translations are mandatory. The British Embassy can provide a list of approved translation services, but translation and notarisation time should be factored into every timeline estimate.
