City repatriation guide
Repatriation from Sofia, Bulgaria
Specific guidance for arranging repatriation from Sofia. Local documentation contacts, airport cargo routes, and the typical process for cases originating in this area.
Sofia is Bulgaria’s capital and the country’s main city break destination for British visitors. It receives a significant volume of UK tourists, partly due to low-cost flight links, partly due to its growing reputation for food, culture, and nightlife. British visitors to Bulgaria are also drawn to the ski resorts (Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo) in winter, and many of those resort visits begin and end at Sofia Airport. Sofia also has a small British resident community, primarily in the business and technology sectors.
Bulgaria is an EU member state but not yet in the Schengen area (accession pending). EU legal frameworks apply in areas such as succession (EU Regulation 650/2012), but the domestic registration and forensic system is Bulgarian.
Consular coverage
The British Embassy Sofia (9 Moskovska Street, Sofia 1000) is the UK diplomatic mission for Bulgaria. Emergency consular assistance for deaths anywhere in Bulgaria goes through the Embassy.

What Bulgarian law requires
Law on Civil Registration (Zakon za grazhdanskata registratsiya, promulgated 1999, amended): Deaths must be registered with the local municipality office (Akt za samart, a death act) within 24 hours. For Sofia, registration is at the Sofia Municipal Administration via the relevant district.
Ministry of Interior (MVR Bulgaria) — Police: Sudden, violent, or unexplained deaths are reported to the MVR. Sofia Metropolitan Police Directorate attends sudden death scenes and co-operates with the National Investigation Service (NIS) in criminal cases.
National Centre of Forensic Medicine (Natsionalen Tsentar po Sadebnа Meditsina, Byala Cherkva 2, Sofia): The principal forensic pathology institution in Bulgaria, operating under the Ministry of Justice. Post-mortems ordered by the prosecutor for Sofia are conducted here.
Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office (Sofiyska gradska prokuratura): The prosecutor authorises post-mortems and releases the body for burial or repatriation.
Permit to transport internationally: Under the Health Act (Zakon za zdraveto) and the Ordinance on the conditions and procedure for transportation of the deceased (Naredba No.2/2011 of the Ministry of Health), a health permit is required for international transport.
