Fiji sits at an unusual midpoint: English documentation makes the paperwork side genuinely easier than most Pacific destinations, but the geography works against you.
The routing problem
Start with the basic fact that shapes every Fiji case: there’s no direct cargo flight to the UK. Fiji Airways, Qantas, and Air New Zealand all connect through Sydney, Melbourne, or Auckland before the final leg to London. That connection is baked into every case regardless of circumstances, so it’s a cost you can plan for rather than one that catches families out later.
Location within Fiji matters more than people expect
Not every part of Fiji is equal here. A death in Suva or Nadi, on the main island of Viti Levu, moves through the standard process without any inter-island transfer. Move to Vanua Levu and you’re looking at a domestic flight adding a day or two. The Yasawa Islands, the Mamanuca Islands, and especially the remote, scattered Lau Group are the hardest cases: getting a body from an outer atoll to Viti Levu can itself take two to three days, and nothing else can start until that happens.
When diving is involved
Fiji’s reputation as a world-class diving destination cuts both ways. Decompression illness is one of the more common causes of death among British visitors here, and these cases typically bring closer scrutiny: a review of dive logs, equipment condition, and surface interval records. That adds 5 to 10 days on average, along with the coordination cost of managing a more detailed investigation.
Post-mortem capacity
Post-mortems for unnatural deaths happen at Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, with Lautoka Hospital covering western Viti Levu. Vanua Levu and outer island cases all transfer to Suva for this step, another reason island location shapes the overall picture so heavily.
If cremation suits the family better than a full-body return, it’s available in Suva, and bringing ashes home is often a simpler, less costly alternative worth discussing early.
