A government that controls every step
Eritrea’s ruling party, the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice, controls the country’s administrative, legal, and civil processes without an independent judiciary or free press to check the pace. That single fact defines this corridor more than any document or airport. The British Embassy in Asmara maintains a resident presence and registers deaths for UK purposes, but its capacity to speed up an Eritrean government decision is limited. Not absent, but limited, and families deserve to hear that plainly.
The sequence, for what it’s worth
A physician certifies cause of death, the Regional Administration registers it, and the Ministry of Health reviews the case before issuing an export permit. National Security clearance may follow, though it isn’t routinely triggered by a natural death. There’s no mechanism anywhere in this chain to speed a step along, and communication from Eritrean authorities about where a case stands tends to be irregular.
When National Security gets involved
This has come up in cases involving dual Eritrean and British nationals, people who’d previously left the country without authorisation, deaths in sensitive locations, or where the person had known political associations. If any of that applies, telling both the FCDO and your repatriation coordinator the full picture early genuinely helps.
Limited flights, longer routing
Asmara International Airport’s international service is thin. Cairo with EgyptAir and Jeddah with Eritrean Airlines are the current options, and cargo typically routes onward through Cairo or Dubai before reaching London. Low departure frequency can mean cargo sits waiting in Asmara for days at a time.
