Brazil is a big country, and that size shows up directly in how a repatriation case unfolds. Where the death happened matters almost as much as what caused it.
Sao Paulo and Rio set the standard
Tanatopraxia, embalming, is well established in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, both in terms of quality and simple availability. Move away from those major centres and the picture gets more variable. A death in a smaller city can mean an internal transfer to reach a properly equipped funeral home before the case can move forward at all, which adds time that a case in a major city wouldn’t need.
The IML decides whether there’s a wait
Not every death needs a forensic post-mortem. A natural death with a clear medical cause is registered at the local Cartorio de Registro Civil and can proceed relatively quickly. Where the cause isn’t clear, the Instituto Medico Legal steps in, and its post-mortem can add one to three weeks to the overall timeline. It’s worth knowing early which category a case falls into.
A fixed requirement: the coffin
Whatever else varies, Brazil requires a zinc-lined coffin for any remains travelling by air, in line with IATA international transport rules. Funeral directors in the major cities handle this routinely; it’s one of the few genuinely fixed points in an otherwise variable process.
Consular support, spread across four cities
The British Embassy in Brasilia is the main post, with consulates in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Recife covering the areas where most British visitors and residents are concentrated. Whichever is nearest to the death is usually the quickest first call, and each can direct families to funeral directors experienced with UK cases.
