Botswana is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, and most of what shapes a repatriation case there comes down to a single question: was the death in Gaborone, or out in the bush?
No roads into the Delta
The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, is reached only by small aircraft, mokoro, or motorboat. There are no roads into the concessions at all. A death in a private bush camp, on a mobile safari, or in the Moremi Game Reserve needs charter aircraft or helicopter evacuation to Maun Airport first, typically one to four hours depending on location, before any transfer toward Gaborone can even start. Build 24 to 96 hours of pre-documentation delay into any delta case.
Where the post-mortem happens matters
Maun and Kasane hospitals can handle straightforward post-mortems locally. Anything more complex needs the Department of Forensic Pathology at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone, which means the same evacuation and transfer stage all over again for a case that started in the delta or at Chobe.
Landlocked, routing through Johannesburg
Botswana has no direct flights to the UK. Every case routes via OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, with Nairobi as an alternative through Kenya Airways. Cargo capacity at Johannesburg needs pre-booking before a departure date can be confirmed, a coordination step that has nothing to do with Botswana’s own documentation but affects timing all the same.
An advantage most neighbours don’t share
Documentation in Botswana is in English throughout, and the British High Commission in Gaborone has genuine experience with both safari-destination deaths and remote bush camp logistics. Cremation is also available locally in Gaborone, an option that isn’t on the table in several neighbouring countries.
