Zambia is a Commonwealth country, and the British High Commission in Lusaka is the point of contact for consular matters. There’s no direct flight from Lusaka to the UK, so every repatriation routes through Johannesburg on South African Airways or British Airways, or through Nairobi on Kenya Airways. Either connection adds at least one transit day to the schedule.
Why Victoria Falls needs its own step
Most British visitor activity in Zambia centres on Victoria Falls, approached from Livingstone on the Zambian side, plus the Copperbelt, South Luangwa National Park, and the Lower Zambezi. White-water rafting, bungee jumping, and micro-light flights over the Falls draw a steady stream of adventure tourists, and they’re also the source of most activity-related deaths.
A death at Victoria Falls or in the surrounding national park, on the Zambian side, brings the Zambia Wildlife Authority into the process alongside the Zambia Police Service. The Wildlife Authority has to certify what happened before the police investigation formally opens. This is a genuine extra step, not a formality that can be skipped.
One detail catches families out: the Zimbabwean side of the Falls is administered by Zimbabwe, not Zambia. If death occurred there instead, Zimbabwean procedures apply, not the process described here.
How the official process works
Deaths are registered at the Registrar General’s Office under the Births and Deaths Registration Act. Unnatural deaths are investigated by the Zambia Police Service, and post-mortems are carried out at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka. Nothing moves without sign-off: the Director of Public Prosecutions has to authorise both the post-mortem and the release of the body. The Ministry of Health issues the export permit only once every piece of documentation is complete.
Realistic timelines
A natural death in Lusaka, with cooperative documentation, typically takes 10 to 14 days. An investigated death needing DPP authorisation runs 14 to 21 days. A death at Victoria Falls, or in a remote area generally, can extend to 21 to 42 days once you account for the additional Wildlife Authority and police coordination.
