If someone in your family has died in Vanuatu, the first thing to understand is this: there is no British Embassy or High Commission in the country. Under the UK-Australia Consular Sharing Agreement, the Australian High Commission in Port Vila steps in to provide emergency consular assistance to British nationals. It’s an established arrangement, and Australian consular staff are trained to handle exactly this situation. It just isn’t the process families expect.
The British High Commission in Papua New Guinea holds formal diplomatic accreditation to Vanuatu, but it isn’t the practical first point of contact. Call the Australian High Commission Port Vila for immediate help on the ground, and notify the FCDO Emergency Travel Line in London on 020 7008 5000, which runs 24 hours a day. A specialist UK repatriation company should be your third call, and ideally your first.
An archipelago of 80 islands
Vanuatu spreads 80 islands across 1,300 kilometres of the South Pacific. Most British visitors stay in Port Vila on Efate, or travel to Luganville on Espiritu Santo. Deaths in either location connect reasonably quickly to Vila Central Hospital, the country’s main medical and forensic facility.
A death on Tanna, Malekula, Ambrym, or any other outer island is a different matter. Getting the body to Port Vila for documentation can take two to five days, depending on available transport and the weather. There is no way to shortcut this step.
Why Mount Yasur matters
Tanna’s Mount Yasur is one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world, and it draws a steady stream of British tourists. Deaths from volcanic activity, toxic gas, or falls near the crater rim happen, and they carry the same inter-island transfer requirement as any other outer-island death, plus additional investigation given the circumstances.
When forensic capacity runs out
Vila Central Hospital’s forensic pathology capacity is limited. For a disputed cause of death, or one involving trauma or possible criminal activity, the Vanuatu government may ask Australia for specialist forensic assistance. Arranging this takes time. It adds significantly to the overall case, and there’s no way around it if the local capacity genuinely isn’t there.
Cyclone season
Cyclone season runs from November to April. Tropical cyclones regularly disrupt the inter-island boats and charter flights that outer-island cases depend on. A death on a remote island during this period can face real delays before the body even reaches Port Vila, let alone before it’s ready to leave the country.
All cargo connections to the UK route via Brisbane or Sydney. There’s no direct option from Vanuatu.
