What actually helps
Death registration goes through the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and everything comes out in English from the start. The geography still matters
Guadalcanal, home to the capital Honiara, is where the process actually happens. Everywhere else is a different story. The country’s roughly 28,400 square kilometres of land is scattered across hundreds of islands, and provinces like Malaita, Western Province, Choiseul, Isabel, Makira-Ulawa, and Temotu depend on small airports or boats, sometimes both. A death in one of these areas means getting the body to Honiara first, which can take several days on its own before any of the formal documentation process starts.
The document chain
A death certificate from the Registrar, police clearance where relevant, an embalming certificate from a licensed local mortuary, a freedom from infection certificate from the Ministry of Health, and an export permit. Because it’s all in English, this chain tends to move at a reasonable pace once the body has reached Honiara.
The route home
Honiara International Airport connects via Brisbane or Port Moresby on Solomon Airlines, Fiji Airways, or Air Niugini for onward UK travel. Cremation isn’t an option here, so full repatriation is standard for every case.
FCDO advises increased caution in parts of Honiara linked to a history of inter-community tensions, though the situation has settled since the unrest of 2021; check current guidance before travel.
