Where the delays creep in
A non-natural death changes the picture. The Prokuratúra, Slovakia’s Prosecutorial Office, has to authorise release of the body, and that clearance can take several days beyond what a natural death would need. Every piece of Slovak documentation, whatever the cause of death, needs certified translation into English before it’s of any use to a UK Coroner. Your specialist firm should be arranging this as standard, not treating it as an extra step.
Three airports, one clear choice usually
Bratislava’s M.R. Štefánik Airport has direct London flights on Ryanair, Wizz Air, and seasonal carriers. Vienna International, roughly an hour by road, offers a wider set of UK connections and is often the more practical choice depending on timing. Košice International serves eastern Slovakia, connecting via Prague or Vienna for anyone in that part of the country.
Cremation, if it’s the family’s preference
Slovakia has an extensive network of crematoria, including in Bratislava, Košice, and Martin, and cremation is a genuinely common choice locally. For families open to it, this can simplify the process considerably, with ashes returned to the UK in a sealed urn.
